The United States Coast Guard announced in the Federal Register a Request for Information (RFI). The Coast Guard is seeking to better understand, among other things, the intersection between artificial intelligence (AI) and automated or autonomous technologies aboard commercial vessels, and to better fulfill its mission of ensuring our Nation’s maritime safety, security, and stewardship.

This RFI will support the Coast Guard’s efforts to accomplish its mission consistent with the policies and strategies articulated in Executive Order (E.O.) 13859, “Maintaining American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence.”  The executive order announced the policy of the United States Government to sustain and enhance the scientific, technological, and economic leadership position of the United States in AI research and development and deployment through a coordinated Federal Government strategy.

The Coast Guard is interested in hearing from the public on a range of issues related to the potential introduction and development of automated and autonomous technologies aboard commercial vessels or any automated and autonomous vessels subject to U.S. jurisdiction and U.S. port facilities. The Coast Guard encourages participation from all interested parties and will consider all information, comments, and material received during the comment period outlined in the Federal Register post.
