National Safe Boating Week is May 22-28, 2021As we near the summer season, tens of millions of Americans will take to our Nation’s waters to spend time with family and friends. As we enjoy our activities on the water, we must act responsibly to follow safety procedures when boating. During National Safe Boating Week, the Coast Guard urge all Americans to familiarize themselves with the best practices for a safe boating experience. This year also marks the 50th Anniversary of the Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971. https://www.safeboatingcouncil.org/federal-boat-safety-act/ It is recommended that you always wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved Life Jacket appropriate to your water activity. Take a boating safety course or schedule some on water instruction. File a float plan with someone you trust; include a recent photo of your boat. Have a reliable means of communication for your area. Alcohol is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents so it is recommended that you don’t drink and boat. As a reminder, beginning in April 2021 a new law requiring the use of installed Engine Cut-Off Switches went into effect. https://uscgboating.org/recreational-boaters/engine-cut-off-devices.php Now would also be a good time to schedule a Vessel Safety Check, www.safetyseal.net For more information please visit www.safeboatingcampaign.com. The Safe Boating Campaign is produced under a grant from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.
